Site-ul de licitatii a fost inaugurat in San Jose, CA, pe 3 septembrie 1995 de catre programatorul Pierre Omidyar ca un site pentru licitatii in cadrul unui mai mare proiect web al sau, tribut pentru cei afectati de virusul Ebola.
Primul obiect vandut a fost un laser stricat in valoare de 14,83 dolari.

• Licitati devreme sau tarziu, la licitatii care se inchid seara tarziu sau dimineata devreme, astfel sunt mai putini oameni care liciteaza
• Cautati anunturi cu greseli de scriere, sunt mai greu de gasit, deci vor avea mai putini licitanti - ca sa gasiti asemenea anunturi, incercai aceasta cautare
• Cautati anunturi care nu au preturi mari de expeditie a obiecvtelor vandute
• Pariati numere ciudate, majoritatea oamenilor vor pune sume ca 10, 50, 100, ca sa ii intreceti, puneti 10.03, 100.01 etc.
• Vara e un moment bun pentru licitatii, sunt multi vanzatori si mai putini cumparatori
